The Christopher Companies Recognized as Home Innovation
NGBS Green Partner of Excellence
Local Builder Applauded for Excellence
in Advancing High-Performance Mainstream Home Building
[Oakton, VA, August 12th, 2021] – The Christopher Companies has been named a Home Innovation NGBS Green Partner of Excellence for 2020. NGBS Green, which is based on the ICC-700 National Green Building Standard™ (NGBS), has certified more homes than any other national green home certification program. On the heels of reaching the program milestone of 300,000 NGBS Green Certified Homes, we are especially grateful to this year’s recipients for helping NGBS Green thrive over such a turbulent time in the world and in our industry. There were individuals or companies recognized in several categories – NGBS Green Verifiers; Single-Family Builders; Multifamily Builders/Developers; Green Advocates; and Architects. Being recognized among this elite group of green certification participants validates the commitment the Christopher Companies has made to providing its customers with increased value, comfort, durability, and efficiency through its NGBS Green Certified homes.
“In the past year, conversations on how to minimize a building’s impact on the environment, while concurrently addressing how it can improve resident’s health and wellness have become mainstream,” said Michelle Foster, Home Innovation’s Vice President, Sustainability. “Climate change, COVID, natural disasters of increasing frequency and intensity, and a heightened interest in ESG goals have sparked an even greater movement toward building homes that are better for the environment and better for the residents. NGBS Green Partners of Excellence, like the Christopher Companies, are industry professionals who take action to help the industry move to the next level of performance, by creating and promoting sustainable, healthy homes that will yield benefits for years to come.”
“In a marketplace where we see construction costs rising at staggering rates – we refuse to compromise our dedication to our customers and we will continue to be an advocate for green building and keeping intact our energy efficient way of building for years to come.”.
– Rick Normoyle, General Sales Manager, Christopher Companies
To earn certification to the National Green Building Standard, a home must meet rigorous criteria in six categories – Lot & Site Development; Resource Efficiency; Energy Efficiency; Water Efficiency; Indoor Environmental Quality; and Homeowner Education. There are mandatory practices in each category that every NGBS Green Certified home must meet, and there are a wide range of additional optional practices in each category that a builder can select based on the applicability to buyers or renters in their market. There are also mandatory point minimums in every category for a home to attain the next level of certification, which is a more stringent requirement than in any other national certification program.
The Christopher Companies utilizes a variety of different green practices throughout the entire building process, including but not limited to:
- Energy efficient appliances, which are proven to use less energy and water and reduce utility costs.
- Quality insulation & air sealing methods, aiding to eliminate cold spots in a home and excess heating costs, maximizing your comfort and savings
- Low VOC materials, helping to limit emissions of pollutants in the home and improve indoor air quality.
Since January 2009, when the NGBS became the first residential green building rating system to be approved by ANSI, Home Innovation has certified more than 20,000 single-family homes (nearly 7,000 in the pipeline); and close to 288,000 apartments (nearly 156,000 in the pipeline).
